The M18A1 is a radial flow filter canister self enclosed so filter replacement involves minimum exposure. The flow through the filter is from the outer diameter of the filter bed through the carbon bed into the inner tube and out through the filter outlet. The filter long body versus small diameter allows for relative low-pressure drop (1.7 IWG maximum) across the filter. The M18A1 gas filter utilizes ASZM-TEDA, 12 x 30 activated carbon to remove gaseous toxic agents from the air. The filter is housed in a thin steel housing and fitted with smooth hose adapters. Hunter M18A1 filters are commonly used in the M13A1 gas particulate filter unit (GPFU) and can be found in virtually all classes of combat and tactical vehicles.
